Creation of a Productive Workspace

A remote worker can work in different locations, including a ready-made workspace you share with others or an office in your home. Creation of a workspace from scratch only happens when you are working from home. Creating a workspace in your home singlehandedly can be a little tasking, and here are some things you should consider;

  • Appropriate Location: Location is an essential consideration in creating a workspace. When choosing the location of a remote office, you must ensure that it is in a quiet place and free from distractions. To further ensure proper noise cancellation, you can use a soundproof door for the office. The office should also have good lighting, fast internet and enough electrical outlets to power any electronic device you use. It is also important to ensure that the location has a presentable background, especially if virtual meetings will be frequent.
  • Availability of Ergonomic Accessories: Ergonomic accessories increase productivity and reduce discomfort equally. Such accessories include document holders, laptop stands, mouse, and other related items. In remote work, comfort and maximized productivity should be a priority, hence the need for ergonomic accessories.
  • Reduction of Distraction: Remote workers are easily prone to distraction because their work is not done in an official or traditional setting. To reduce distractions, one might have to do intentional things like working behind closed doors, turning off notifications, and blocking off social media.

Time Management

It is easy to lose track of time when you are working alone and get distracted; hence, the need for time management skills and discipline. Some time management skills that can aid productivity in remote work include:

  • Creating a schedule: Creating a schedule helps you keep track of the tasks you are supposed to complete and the time allocated for each task. It also aids accountability and informs people in your home about your working hours. In creating a schedule, it is essential to put in space for personal time for other things aside from work.
  • Prepare like you are going to an actual office: Once you allocate time for work on your schedule, prepare for that time like you are going to a real office. This may involve bathing, getting dressed, and entering your home office promptly.
  • Have a to-do list: This is very important as it helps you track your goals. Your to-do list may be daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on what is convenient for you. As you complete your tasks, you can mark them out of the to-do list.
  • Prioritize important projects: This can be done by listing all your projects and ranking them based on their level of importance. You should prioritize the important and most tasking project. If the tasking project gets overwhelming, you can always switch to the easy task and come back to the difficult ones when you are ready
  • Take breaks: In remote working, one can get carried away and allow work time to take over personal time for oneself and family. Therefore, it is important that you intentionally seek to take occasional breaks from work. It is important to note that taking breaks is not a time to be overly relaxed and get carried away with trivial things like social media. It is a time to refresh and get a clear head. Some beneficial ways of using breaks include spending time with family, sleeping, eating, and other things that generally relax the mind.

Communication and Collaboration

Communication is a very important part of remote working. When working, it is important to utilize digital tools for communication, like Slack, Google Meet, Zoom, and the like. These digital tools enable employees to keep track of their activities, collaborate, and stay connected. For communication, tools like Zoom and Google Meet are used for video conferencing. While tools like Slack and Microsoft Teams are used for quick messaging. Tools like Google Calendar help to create schedules and keep track of tasks. A remote worker should not be isolated; therefore, communication and collaboration are important.

Work-life Balance

In remote working, there is likely to be a very blurred line between work and personal life. And if the line is crossed, it becomes unhealthy, and either the personal or work life suffers. Most times, the personal life suffers the most. Therefore, as a remote worker, it is very necessary that you set boundaries between your work and personal life. Below are some tips to help maintain a work-life balance in remote working;

  • Learn to disconnect: When there are deadlines to meet up with and projects you need to complete, working overtime may be inevitable. However, it would help if you learned to dissociate from your work occasionally. This does not mean you cannot sacrifice extra hours where there is an urgent need, but you need to take breaks to avoid burnout and mental breakdown.
  • Pay attention to healthy eating: You must take time to eat as a remote worker. When you eat, ensure your meals are healthy and refreshing because healthy meals give you the right energy to execute your tasks.
  • Socialise: Remote working can make you forget to socialize, especially if you are an introvert. However, for your mental health, you might need to intentionally choose to leave your home or office and socialize with friends and family. Take time off your screen, go for short walks, and converse with people around you.

For effective remote working, it is important to get a very comfortable home office and utilize time management skills. Furthermore, there is a need to communicate and collaborate with colleagues and have a work-life balance. Implementation of the above tips will help you to be an effective remote worker and also have a balanced life.

The world is evolving rapidly, and many organizations are embracing the concept of remote working as there are available technologies to sustain it. Therefore, it is safe to say that remote work has the potential to be a long-term, sustainable arrangement.
