Postinor-2: The Untold Effects Every Woman Should Know About

It’s been two weeks since you took Postinor-2. Unlike before, your period came late this month. You now feel tired, anxious, and unsure if what you’re experiencing is ‘normal.’ You’re not alone.

Why This Conversation Matters

FOR THE TIME BEING, pills are still one of the few reliable birth control options available to women.

Unfortunately, most discussions around emergency contraceptives (EC) are about avoiding pregnancy, not the [female] body’s response. This narrow focus leaves many women feeling isolated and confused when they experience specific effects.

IT’S TIME, though. Time to broaden the conversation, so women fully understand what Postinor does to their bodies, both physically and emotionally. Understanding these effects removes their fear and ignorance, so they can reclaim control and make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

Let’s help you understand how the drug works, how to use it, its side effects, and the risks of misusing the drug.

What’s Postinor?

We cannot talk about Postinor without first explaining its use—emergency contraception.

According to the Sembuligam Textbook of Medical Physiology (6th Edition), contraception is a type of birth control strategy. By extension, a woman should consider emergency contraception after having unprotected sex and doesn’t want to become pregnant.

Postinor is a contraceptive pill designed for emergency use only. Keyword: “Emergency.”

Postinor-2 works when taken within seventy-two hours of unprotected intercourse. On average, the drug prevents pregnancy by up to 85%; however, this figure increases to 95% if used within the first twenty-four hours after sex. The earlier the better.

How Postinor Works and What to Expect

Postinor-2

The active ingredient in Postinor is called ‘Levonorgestrel,’ a synthetic progestin. It’s the same hormone in many regular birth control pills, except the dose is higher in Postinor because there’s an emergency.

To understand how Postinor works, we must know how pregnancy occurs.

– Partner A releases sperm (ejaculation) and Partner B releases eggs (ovulation)

– Sperm and egg join (fertilization) to become zygote

– Zygote implants into Partner B’s uterine lining, then pregnancy occurs

When a woman takes Postinor before ovulation, Levonorgestrel prevents or delays egg release. If she takes the drug after ovulation, Levonorgestrel prevents implantation by interfering with the zygote’s journey or making the uterine lining thinner.

During pregnancy, the body produces two hormones: oestrogen and progesterone. Postinor tricks the body into thinking it’s already pregnant by releasing artificial versions of these two hormones. It also thickens the mucus in the opening of the uterus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg. Additionally, it thins the womb’s lining, preventing a fertilised egg from staying put and growing.

Historically, Postinor was a two-dose drug while Postinor-2 is a single (more effective) dose.

Postinor-2 Has Side Effects

“I am a woman mi 20’s. Young married. We are having sex during high chance of getring pregnant (according to apps)

Im taking postinor-2 after 24 hours after do sex. After 2 weeks. I experiences with dizzy, nausea, pain in stomach. And so on.

Do postinor-2 effect last long after 2 weeks ?By now, My menstrual cycle delayed 3 days late. After 2 weeks taking postinor-2. I am confused”

The above quote is a question from an anonymous user on a digital healthcare platform.

There are millions of such queries on the internet, and many more that remain offline for several reasons.

Using Postinor-2 comes with discomfort, but you must be able to distinguish between expected side effects and urgent signals requiring medical attention.

When Should You Worry?

The table below shows the immediate effects of using Postinor-2, and they usually subside within days.

It also highlights that it’s common for women to experience an abnormal period after taking the Postinor-2 pill.

Expected Side Effects(Common & Self-Resolving)Urgent Concerns(Seek Medical Attention)
Nausea, vomiting (mild, temporary)Severe abdominal pain, especially one-sided
Headache, dizziness, tiredness, fatigueSevere dizziness, fainting, or extreme weakness
Breast painShoulder pain (potential internal bleeding)
Vaginal bleeding (spotting)Unexplained vaginal bleeding (heavier than normal, or prolonged spotting)
Irregular menstruation (early/late period, altered flow)No period within 3 weeks of taking Postinor-2Black or reddish-black period
Mild abdominal or pelvic pain/crampingSigns of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing)

As mentioned earlier, women need to understand the effects of Postinor-2 so that they can make informed decisions about their reproductive health. The clear symptom checklist below will help with self-monitoring.

  • Bleeding: Is it heavier or prolonged? (Note: duration/amount.)
  • Pain: Is it severe, localized, or accompanied by shoulder pain? (Describe intensity/location.)
  • Dizziness/Weakness: Are you very dizzy, fainting, or unusually weak? (Note: frequency/severity.)
  • Period: Has it been over three weeks since using Postinor-2, and your period hasn’t arrived? (Note: when you used the drug.)
  • Other Symptoms: Any other unusual or severe symptoms? (Describe them.)

If your symptoms are urgent or there are other unusual signs, contact a healthcare professional or certified gynecologist immediately. Early detection is vital for managing complications.

Side Effects Of Postinor-2 On Menstruation

The most common side effect is menstrual flow changes, which may start days earlier or days later; last longer than usual; flow heavier or lighter than normal; or come with more or less pain.

You can also determine the exact effect based on when you take the pill.

  • Within first three weeks of monthly cycle – Period may come earlier than expected
  • During fourth week – Period may come on time but last longer than usual
  • Two days before or after ovulation – No significant changes in menstrual cycle

Abusing emergency contraceptive pills may lead to several negative effects and dangerous complications.

The Effects Are More Than Bleeding

Postinor-2’s impact extends beyond physical bleeding. Let’s help you handle the post-Postinor period with awareness.

Disrupts Your Natural Hormonal Balance

Like any therapeutic drug, EC pills have a wide range of potential side effects; however, there are a few more effects besides the known hazards listed in a typical pill leaflet.

Postinor-2’s high dose of synthetic progestin can lead to mood swings, heightened anxiety, or increased irritability. These psychological effects are a real consequence of [artificial] hormonal changes.

Higher Risk of Ectopic Pregnancy

After years of debate, recent research has linked Levonorgestrel with a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy especially when a woman uses it in the same cycle.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside—instead of inside—the uterus. This result arises from a failure to completely prevent pregnancy only while using pills with Levonorgestrel.

Unfortunately, the symptoms of this serious, life-threatening condition can mimic Postinor-2 side effects, so be vigilant

Watch for: severe, one-sided abdominal pain; unusual vaginal bleeding; shoulder tip pain; and dizziness, fainting, or weakness. If you experience these, especially in combination, consult a medical practitioner immediately.

Cancer!

A UK study that lasted 44 years discovered that women using combination birth control contraceptives (including Levonorgestrel and Estradiol) were at increased risk of both Breast and Cervical cancers.

Likewise, a more recent Danish study also showed a statistically significant association between LNG-IUS use and a slightly increased risk of breast cancer.

Similar results also popped up in Finland after researchers evaluated the use of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, which led to a higher than expected incidence of breast cancer.

Finally, meta-analyses of several studies have shown a slightly increased risk, ranging from 8 to 24%.

You can also refer to the Material and Safety Data Sheets of Levonorgestrel issued in June, 2025, where it has two interesting labels:

  • Carcinogenicity 2 – Suspected of causing cancer.
  • Reproductive toxicity 1A – May damage fertility or the unborn child.

Sadly, there’s not enough extensive data about the long term effect of repeated dosage. At least not yet.

“The active ingredient in Postinor is called ‘Levonorgestrel.’”

Moving On

Emergency contraceptives will only give you peace of mind if you understand their effects and use them as prescribed—only for emergencies.

They also have benefits such as reducing costs, encouraging birth spacing, improving maternal health, preventing abortion, and improving the economic stability of a nation.

However, misusing EC pills like Postinor-2 can steal your health and peace. It can be a one-way ticket to physical, emotional, and psychological torture.

We hope we’ve armed you with sufficient knowledge to make informed decisions regarding Postinor-2.
